What Are The Measures To Reverse And Prevent It?
What is Crepey Skin?
Crepey skin is when your skin becomes dry and severely cracked.
When you look at the skin closely you will see interwoven fine lines that give the skin a similar look to the skin on elephants. The skin loses its smooth and even texture and takes on a dry, parched appearance.
You may find that you have crepey skin on your hands, face, neck, legs, arms, and other parts of your body. This occurrence usually happens gradually and usually appears around the age of 40.
However, the sooner that you spot the beginning of crepey skin the better because of the sooner that you treat it the more success that you will have with reversing crepey skin and preventing it from becoming more severe.
What Causes Crepey Skin?
. One of the most prevalent causes of crepey skin is the loss of collagen as we age. When we are younger are body produces much higher amounts of collagen, it is the naturally occurring substance that gives the skin its fullness and plump appearance. The production of the substance gradually slows down and without it, the skin gains a loose appearance.
Another cause of crepey skin is moisture loss. Similar to the way that our skin slows down the production of collagen, our body also produces less moisture as we age we can attribute to crepey skin.
Sun damage, unprotected skin that is exposed to the sun’s rays may develop crepey skin over time. Sometimes we don’t realize just how much our skin is exposed to the sun. If you are sitting in a moving car your skin is at risk for sun damage and even if you are running errands your skin requires the protection of SPF (preferable a sun block) and/or protective clothing.
Steps to Reverse and Prevent Crepey Skin
Add plenty of moisture to your skin:
Even if you have oily skin you may find that as you age your skin becomes dry and it requires more moisture. Ensure that you are applying moisturizer in the morning and at night. At night you can add extra moisture to your skin by using a thicker night cream. * Exfoliate area at least once a week
You can also use beauty sprays and mists to add bits of moisture to your skin throughout the day as you need it. You should stay away from products that dry your skin out and any skin care products that contain alcohol as they will be harsh on the skin and may worsen or cause crepey skin. You should also avoid foundations or primers that are made to provide a matte finish (clay and minerals) to the skin as they are usually drying products.
Protect all skin that is exposed to the sun:
Protecting your skin from the sun is a crucial part of preventing crepey skin and keeping it from getting worse. Your skin can develop crepey skin prematurely if you do not provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays. If you already have crepey skin sun exposure will only worsen the problem. Wear SPF or SUN BLOCK and cover your body with light layers when you will in the sun for long periods of time. Also, make sure that you are protecting all of your skin that is exposed. One area that people often forget to use SPF on is the hands. They are usually always exposed to the sun and they are the place that most people develop crepey skin first.
